Re: Easiest way to build an "always-on" sample-based noise generator in Reason?

Good to know, thanks! I'm sure I'll probably get Torsion sooner or later for all of its other capabilities anyway. When looping samples with Torsion, is it possible to have it play "perfectly" with no artifacting? That was the problem I ran into with Grain earlier. Admittedly I haven't learned my wa...

Re: Easiest way to build an "always-on" sample-based noise generator in Reason?

Got it figured out. As suspected, the culprit is buggy/glitchy coding. The first time Reason initializes certain devices in any given session, regardless of whether or not this is done at startup, CV signals take a finite amount of time to stabilize and don't function properly during that brief inte...

Re: Easiest way to build an "always-on" sample-based noise generator in Reason?

Yeah, I wouldn't think this was intended behavior, but who knows. I do tend to close/restart Reason on a regular basis, so am hoping there's a solution for this. Worst case, I'm sure there are plenty of VSTs that can easily do things like this, though I'm not sure where to even start narrowing down ...

Re: Easiest way to build an "always-on" sample-based noise generator in Reason?

Very odd! I've tried it with your pink noise sample as well as several of my own, all very short/small. Makes no difference, it's always silent on first load, then works fine on all subsequent loads in the same session after "activation". I'm on Reason 10.1.2d1, so if you're using a different versio...

Re: Easiest way to build an "always-on" sample-based noise generator in Reason?

Thanks selig, that is indeed an elegant simplification of your previous version, but the behavior appears to be the same: the loop survives pressing stop on the transport, but there's no auto-start when initially loading the combi or song file (though, once again, the auto-start strangely DOES work ...

Re: Easiest way to build an "always-on" sample-based noise generator in Reason?

Thanks madmacman, but your solution appears to be similar to the one that chimp_spanner originally came up with upthread. I've just tried out the combi you uploaded, and it behaves as selig predicted: no auto-start even when saving the patch with Button1 enabled, and more seriously, pressing the sto...

Re: Easiest way to build an "always-on" sample-based noise generator in Reason?

Well, that's actually part of the problem; when using the combi that selig constructed, the pattern IS running automatically, and I even see the little "Note On" light in the "Trigger" section at the top of the Thor blinking on periodically, but somehow that's not causing the NNXT to receive any not...

Re: Easiest way to build an "always-on" sample-based noise generator in Reason?

Thanks! I should've known it'd be Thor riding to the rescue... ;) Selig, your example is very clever and works around the stop-button problem beautifully, but I can't seem to get it to start playing on its own when loading the combi or song file. I get silence until I send a note-on directly to the ...

Re: Easiest way to build an "always-on" sample-based noise generator in Reason?

My idea: put the sample in NN-19 with loop mode and use the free CV8X4 to set the gate CV input (set the first knob of the CV8X4 to maximum and connect the CV out of the first knob to the CV gate in on the NN-19). This should play the sample forever (not tested yet). Excellent idea! This does indee...

Re: Easiest way to build an "always-on" sample-based noise generator in Reason?

If you want to go minimal, you can take a NN19, load your sample in it, flip it around and wire it's LFO output to the gate. Tweak the front panel to taste. Brilliant, thanks! Exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. The only problem with this approach is that, of course, the LFO retriggers the...

Re: Easiest way to build an "always-on" sample-based noise generator in Reason?

Some interesting ideas so far, thanks! As the topic indicates, I need to build a noise generator in Reason that uses a sample as the noise source, and it needs to be "always-on"--that is, generating the noise at all times, even when the song isn't playing. I shudder to think at the sheer number of w...

Re: Everyday Ideas

Here's a thought I had the other day. When you're sleepy in a very quiet room, so quiet you can hear your ears doing their low-level lack-of-stimulus "background hiss". Y'know what I mean? And then you hear a sound (try gently clapping your hands, or clicking your tongue) - hear how the in-ear hiss...

Re: Work space dividers & general screen layout rant :)

Yes, the dividers are extremely annoying, which is one of the reasons I exclusively use Reason with the rack and mixer split off into their own windows. No dividers at all in the mixer window, only the "Browser" divider in the rack window, and just that plus the "Sequencer" one in the sequencer wind...

Re: How to create this sound?

Bit of a leftfield suggestion, but could it actually just be a recording of a normal sustained chord, with the bend applied via a slowdown of the audio track? Not sure what kinds of tape machines they used on that album, but I'd think it would have been an easy enough thing to simply turn down the s...

Re: What happened to the "VST windows get keyboard focus" option?

Must be, thanks for the confirmation. I guess there's simply no way to get VSTs to see those keys now? Very unfortunate. There are plugins out there (admittedly not many, but still) with functions that can ONLY be triggered from the F-keys. A "pass all keypresses to VST window" option or similar rea...

Re: Kontakt slow loading times

I have Revolution and have never been able to get it to load in less than 2 minutes. Granted, I'm loading it off a non-SSD external drive, which I'm sure is probably making things worse, but I don't think that's the main issue. The sheer number of samples (as opposed to overall size in bytes) in the...

Re: What happened to the "VST windows get keyboard focus" option?

Yes, but that only seems to apply to the alphanumeric keys. I can't seem to figure out any way to get VSTs to see, for example, F1-F12. Is that no longer possible due to the removal of the option? If anyone here can get any VSTs to see F-keys, I'd like to know which VSTs, and whether you're doing an...

What happened to the "VST windows get keyboard focus" option?

Reason 9.5 had a "VST windows get keyboard focus" option in the Options menu, from what I recall. It seems to have been removed for Reason 10. How the heck are we supposed to route keyboard input to a VST now? Reason 10 seems to be trying to "intelligently" figure out where to route keyboard input o...

Re: Is it me or is the Reason 'find missing files' window useless?

However, this is not true, Reason has a fantastic capability of locating stuff inside refills. You can move on and toss the old. Locate the sounds by pointing to the new refill; everything is done automatically. Save the song. Done .[/i] I explained at some depth why it doesn't work, Patrick. So pl...
