Re: (Mellow) A New Life - My First Vocals...
That song has a lot of potential with a bit of tweaking, a middle-8 / breakdown of some kind. And IMHO the part that goes 'Good times we had together, I'll remember you forever' should be the culmination, the resolution, the payoff. So you want to 'hint' at it earlier and then really let it bloom a...

Re: POLL: What Version are you using in March 2017 ?
I'm on version 8 now but as soon as I finish the songs I am working on now I'll go up to version 9. I just don't want to disrupt anything right now as I am in the mixing stage and need everything to stay absolutely exactly where it is until I get final mixes. (and some use the Line 6 amps, which I a...

Re: "A distance grows around our bodies"
It depends a bit on how busy the mix is, how well you can hear whatever effect or treatment you do to the sound you want to put at a distance. If the mix is fairly sparse then a room reverb might be all it needs. Another thing you can do is add a touch of slapback echo as it's more obvious in a mix....

How to mix / master for vinyl
Just curious if anyone here has experience on this. I am close to finishing an album of 70's inspired classic rock and will be looking into having some cut / pressed in vinyl (33.3rpm LP). I have read a fair bit of the limitations of vinyl, things like the overall low end level, not having the highs...

Re: Selig Leveler dry/wet blend
So far I've been using it at 50% and then I run a little compression after it, usually the Cakewalk. This is the common denominator in the vocal chain on all the songs I'm currently mixing for my album. Some of them have quite a bit of variation in levels so sometimes I get out the razorblade tool a...

Re: BEST DRUM SAMPLES
I'm doing classic rock, some slightly more retro rock and some prog. So for me it has been a quest to get real sounding drum tracks. My favourite loops are from The Loop Loft. It can take a lot of time auditioning and trying things but so far I think the best sounding drums on the stuff I'm working ...

Re: Yet another headphones question
I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 540 'reference gold' that I bought in the early 1990s and they're still going strong and sound amazing, the frequency response is very flat. They sound very similar to my Equator D5s but give me a better picture of the low end. They have been superceded by newer models...

Is there any device that can do this?
Just curious if there is any type of software that can do this: It would be some kind of dynamic multiband EQ / spectrum analyser that can take a 'snapshot' of a sound and then will use its EQ bands to try to maintain that particular profile dynamically as the sound plays. For example, lets say you ...

Re: Mix Not Translating to Car, Help Please!
I can hear some low mid frequency build-up in there. I'm using Equator D5s. I can hear it in my phones as well (Senn HD540s). My guess is it's in both the rhodes and the bass and the two cross paths now and then and emphasis certain frequencies.

Re: Your fave album? Why? What makes a great album?
I have lots of of albums I love for different reasons. One I'll mention here because when it came out it was really a production milestone and precursor of things to come. It is 'Adventures in Modern Recording' by the Buggles. But this was really the debut of what would become Trevor Horn's signatur...

creating a channel for an individual output
OK, this is probably really a noobie thing but I'm not sure what's the best way to do this: Let's say I have an RE that has the option of individual outputs, in this case specifically it is the Studio Drummer RE. I wanted to break out the snare to a separate channel so I could process and EQ it sepa...

Re: Radical Piano 1.04 in the shop
I use it a lot but that's because most of my songs are based around piano and sometimes the Radical pianos have just the right character to cut through in a busy mix.

Re: Universe is expanding into what?
Rival theory doesn't make sense to me if we believe that the observations from different scientist are true. Expansion is happening and you can test it by observing the "red shift" in distant objects in the universe. At least cosmologists, astronomers, astrophysicists are telling us this. Mataya Pl...

Re: Any refills of all the vintage string synths?
Thanks :-) I actually have Retrospective and didn't realise there are so many string synths in there. I got it originally for the CP70 and PPG stuff and had not really dug into it. I just checked out some of the combinators and there's some really nice sounds. The Solina is better than the other one...

Any refills of all the vintage string synths?
Has anyone created a refill with things like the Logan string melody, Freeman, Crumar, Moog etc. basically something with lots of classic string machines?
I do have a couple Solinas but they're not that great really.

Re: Mimicking analog mixer "coloration" in Reason?
My CPU can only handle one track on this devices using oversampling an the high CPU mode. I set the input and gain real low, without distortion. It's extremely subtle indeed and might be hard to hear. Maybe try it on some less complex stuff like a bassdrum and snare. Thanks Marco, yeah I'll export ...

Re: Mimicking analog mixer "coloration" in Reason?
Marco, are you finding it (the SGA1566) is best on a single instrument? What sort of gain settings on it? I have just opened it up in MixBus and just threw on a rough mix of something and on a whole mix I'm not really hearing anything until I go too high with the gain and it distorts. I suspect it n...

Re: Mimicking analog mixer "coloration" in Reason?
Are you aware of the Shattered Glass Audio SGA1566 device? It's extremely heavy on CPU but it sounds absolutely stunning. When using it on a track with extremely clean settings, no obvious saturation can be heart, the peak stays the same but overall loudness feels a little compressed but in such a ...

Re: Mimicking analog mixer
Not sure I agree that more EQ is a smoother sound and less EQ is more harsh…not even sure how that would be possible! ;) But I DO agree that in the transition from analog to digital production the SAME amount of EQ added (by habit) produced a harsher results because you started with more HF energy ...

Re: Mimicking analog mixer "coloration" in Reason?
Bear in mind as well analogue recordists of old were trying to keep these kind of artifacts to a minimum, not to make a feature out of, I was listening to some Downtempo Lounge station the other day and pretty much every track was overcooked with such effects and it just sounded pretentious rather ...
