if you don't have an asio soundcard yet you could try FL Studio Asio Drivers v1.03 (search the web) with your current sound chipset, it works ok for me when i don't use external sound card on my laptop for example (usually with 512 buffer size)

yes of course and as a person who don't own any hardware (rack) and used only software til now, i must say that modular feels like Reason in hardware form and Reason was a great way to know this stuff and now to feel at home with this thing

For the monitor, maybe you have preferences/audio/monitoring to Automatic? turn it to Manual, for the vst issues reason have some bugs, when i tested Solorack vst and others had some gfx/input weird bugs too
