we need to talk about drums.

In the world of 'real', composed music drums rarely come first. Drums are added to enhance the rhythm once the chord progression and melodies are developed not to be the rhythm with some other sounds added. This is why making your own pattern will almost always fit better and loops will commonly fee...

My First Song Post...So be Nice.

Hi Nice song and delivery. Elements of Country and Folk Rock. First to mind is the John Stewart album "Bombs Away Dream Babies".  I would caution you to keep the vocal in front though as right now the guitar is clearer than the voice (which occasionally fades back). Don't forget to develop some melo...

How do I post a song up?

Hi

You would usually use a music posting/streaming service like Soundclound. Bandcamp or even YouTube and embed that in a your Post here. Failing that I guess you have to use a file storage service like DropBox and we have to download the file. Most people will prefer the former.

First Song in about 2 DRY YEARS... I present. Ascension 2.0

Hi Mr F Enormous drums! I think the things that get me in a negative sense are the grindy sound which seems to grate rather than feel warm. And after the first few moments the drums do swamp the piece which damages the otherwise softish vibe. I would either use two sets of drums or two mix methods t...

Hi Mr Mode You can have an album with many different styles BUT only so long as there is a thing that connects them strongly enough. Sadly these days people seem super defensive about sub-genres so perhaps that common things needs to be a stronger than say in the 80's where being interesting was exp...

Remember 'Dave' from Boyinaband?

Clever

But I am wondering if he has ever heard of Wikipedia. You can learn anything you want on there. Might solve some of his angst.

Good on him.

Hi Mr Mode The Big V is easy to emulate in some ways but in others he has a unique feel that is easy to miss. He has this ability to wait till the note is really needed then play it and let it hang. There is a great little peek in to his method on the Wikipedia page near the bottom http://en.wikiped...

Is there a way to make Reason stop...

Hi I know what you mean as former DAWs I had would stop at the End. But wonder why they do that? Well because of the early limits on computers etc. These days having the player play on has no practical negative outcome at all. However stopping can. Imagine you were recording a noodle and the tape ra...

Had a Quick Chat with D16 group Szymon About Phoscyon 303 EMULATION

This may be inaccurate but: The thing that seems revealing to me about the common SDK/UI answer for not porting/developing for the RE format is that the talk is always on the UI and not on the sound. I am not aware of any VST Dev saying "I would love to make an RE but I just couldn't get it to sound...

Free Music - Why would you give your music away for free?

The rules that seem to work for someone who is someone are not relevant to nobodies. U2 can give away records as a successful sales/promotion model (well generally speaking anyway). I can't. Successful people can self-mythologize about how being free made them successful but it isn't true. It is jus...

Travel Destinations for the World Weary - new album 100% Reason 8

Hi I really wouldn't say there is any synth that is much better than another as it is the act of knowing an instrument inside out (so to speak) which helps you "learn how it thinks". My first synth was a Casio CZ-1000 which had a reputation for being a pain to program as it was all under those membr...

Travel Destinations for the World Weary - new album 100% Reason 8

Hi Jan Thanks. I think it is great when we can not be into something personally but still respect that it is of value. It makes a community work well but it also sets people on the path of true music. I know my music improved when I DJ'd and realized that S Club 7 were a lot of fun even if I didn't ...

Thanks for the lyric. It is a good one for a rock song.

You'll find Justin under "The Darkness" - listen to the "Permission To Land" album.

Hi Mr Man II

Chunky. Vocals are odd in that Justin Hawkins sort of way. Sadly I am finding them a bit hard to hear/understand.

Keep at this tho as there is something special in here that needs to come out more then you could be a college radio star.

Hi Mr Victory Without knowing what you want your mix to should like it is clear in that each part is easily heard and there is good space. Some nice sounds in here. My only concern is that I feel that mids are missing and that takes the snap and reach-out-to-you away from sounds that should (to my m...

Hi Mr Enerji

Got that big rollicking ride thing going on. Reminds me a bit of 808 State which is one of the few 90's Techno bands I bought a record of.

Hi Mr Pro

You are just flaunting your Bandcamp plug abilities - aaaagh!  :P

A nice track and yes the guitar sounds great. The drums are fine really. Any bigger and they'd crush everything. Well done.

Travel Destinations for the World Weary - new album 100% Reason 8

Thanks guys Mr Enerji the cymbals are the ReFill that Selig made for us when someone asked about samples of rolls back in the PUF. It is actually a really big sound. Quite different from what I expected based on what I hear in something like a Vangelis piece. I guess it could have been quieter at ti...

Combinator patches inside a ReFill - was does it mean to you?

So in the end I see a Thor and a Combi with a Thor as equal. I am glad that there is something called opinion, and I will totally disagree with this point. If I have a combi, I can control a Thor LFO and process the audio different. I can add effects which the thor patch are missing and so on. I ca...

What's the big idea with the "member titles"?

I have 25+years and more albums than that under my belt and I am still classed as a "Dabbler" in this tiny part of the world so perhaps there are more important things to fret over.  :s0801:

Combinator patches inside a ReFill - was does it mean to you?

Hi Just for the sake of conversation. I have noticed that many ReFill makers make patches on a device like Thor and then make Combis of those patches. As if the Combis are a "super patch" of the core sound. I have never looked at it that way. I look to make a sound and then use whatever gets me ther...

Gearheads, what are you wishing for/looking forward to most?

The parts where he does this disturbs me for some reason. https://s3.amazonaws.com/files.websitetoolbox.com/177147/2223724   I think it is wonderful. I can now use a chair to play my guitar. Picks just don't cut it for me but till now anything heavier pulls the instrument out of tune. If it as good...
