Re: What headphones to get

I like car acoustics with vocals. Tried once after a female vocalist needed better sound with limited tools. You know, take a laptop, your mic, get in a car, take your nylon stockings off - and there was a huge improvement. xD Wouldn't be very efficient to get a car just for that. Plus when I tried...

Re: What headphones to get

Talking about acoustics: I've been in superb sounding rooms which was not a pleasure to work in. There are so many things which are an influence on how you listen, how you enjoy working in a room/place. I've done stuff with a headphone, a laptop and a half broken guitar which was a totally pleasure...

Re: Making drum beats? & ethics question.

There are multiple 'beats' on Fame, each could be a song on their own. I suggest using one, not all, of the beats and no one would be able to recognize it on it's own. Change the tempo a bit, change the key/feel of your music, put on your own melody, and it's YOUR song!

Re: Noob volume question

The problem is the dynamics. Comparing soft to loud velocities, the Grand piano is 24 dB from a velocity of 32 to 127, the Upright it 32 dB, but the Dance Piano is only 12 dB. Or to put it another way, at a velocity of 64 (playing a three note chord), here's the peak output level of each: Grand -19 ...

Re: Behringer Shares Plans For Cloning Roland System 100 Modular Synthesizer

This is a good start, but what would get me hooked is the 700 system - had a brochure for that as a teen and I dreamed about having that system one day!

Nothing is keeping me. Why say that? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Well, it comes off as if you struggle with getting a professional room done. So it sounded to me. I’ve been lucky to work in some absolutely world class rooms in the past, so if I give the impression mine is not up to those sta...

Re: What headphones to get

The likely reason pink noise didn’t come up before now is this thread is about choosing headphones! ;) Any confusion about pink noise and calibration is probably from the old school technique of using pink noise with an RTA to do real time calibration. Now days most folks use a swept sine approach ...

Re: R.I.P. Cakewalk.

No it wasn’t Softube. Softube have done very accurate LA2A emulations. The Cakewalk one doesn’t actually behave like a hardware opto cell. I’ve only just started working with the RE2A in Reason, and it sounds like an opto compressor to me. Prefer it over the McDSP Moo for many things. As always, it...

Re: What headphones to get

It took quite a dozen comments until the fact that something like pink noise is used for calibrating systems and measuring, was even hinted. No wonder it sort of (sort of!) sounds smooth on my headphones - but sub bass, especially 20-40 Hz region is not properly audible. Like what, am I supposed to...

Thanks for this tip - I’ve never gotten around to using this with my iPad until now. After only a few seconds I had it up and running with audio and MIDI and Link!

Re: Taking a break from music making?

That's the first stage, where I spew out ideas like a child and don't judge them at all. The second stage is to take all the pieces and start putting them together logically, with judgement. When I confuse those two stages is where I get into trouble! I've called this the "Spew, then Edit" approach...

Re: Making any sound fuller

To give the "darling killer" some credit, there are plenty of folks out there who want to put something in a "master chain" and they probably overdo it. My way of working is to process things individually as much as I can. I don't even like using master send fx actually but that is more suitable fo...

What’s to explain - there are no rules, no tricks, no shortcuts. And not everyone loves Thriller… Which song on Thriller has a grey noise shape? Sent from some crappy device using Tapatalk I meant close to, as in something similar. Well, Thriller sort of has it, but since it was still the vinyl era...

Human nature - we make music for humans so we need to know what humans like! [emoji6] Alright, but how to explain Thriller still being unbeaten, sounding top notch - having something closer to gray noise shapes? What’s to explain - there are no rules, no tricks, no shortcuts. And not everyone loves...

you should never make everything sound the same.

if everything sounds full, it is full of shit.
I said 'any', not 'every', in the title.
Just as important IMO to know how to make any sound thinner, but you don't hear folks ask for that as often… ;)

The most neutral is the best IMO, because it’s going to be in the middle of the spectrum with regards to all possible playback systems out there. If you’ve never had the chance to listen to music in a well balanced room, do whatever you can do to make it happen - it may change your life! I can stil...

Re: What headphones to get

At least listen to sine waves carefully. If you hear one louder than the other, then it's not calibrated the same way. Start with B0 (30.87Hz) and always go one octave above. Or use a tone generator. 30 Hz, 60 Hz, 120 Hz, etc. The single frequencies are SUPPOSED to sound as if they had different vo...

What headphones to get

My system IS calibrated. I can only hear what you hear if I had your body. I think we are talking past each other here - look at the response to the noise and you’ll see what I’m talking about - there’s no EQ I’m aware of that can fix that noise sample to sound natural. Ah, as an IT guy, I can't resist a good Mac vs PC debate. As I said, I'm in IT. I've worked on just about everything. I used to own a macbook and even an apple server. *Used to*. What headphones to get

That sounds horrible to my ears, not smooth at all with some frequencies sticking way out and others lost. I think there's something wrong going on here, as this has very odd jumps in the response, not a smooth curve but a jagged response that is bound to mislead you if you're using it as any sort ...

I even found an approximate gray noise sample, that should sound more or less, even in all frequency bands after your system was calibrated to your hearing by equalizing with the help of sine waves. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xXlAugL0RmE_frPQ9RgDuG7SjdgBXlig/view?usp=sharing That sounds horri...

Re: What headphones to get

Then you're tools are the wrong ones. You should be able to find flat sounding stuff. There are many great headphones with a flat frequency range. Reference material sounds great on these. Yeah, the current headphones really have a sound I don't like at all. When equalized flat, this little sample ...
