And Orange didn't reset because ... well I cut the clips to lengths that didn't correspond to 16 steps in the sequencer, and removed the overlapping notes. Then it reset also. Problem solved.

I had read the manual... a while ago (4-5 months?). I don't usually use the mic, mostly the audio interface. So I had forgotten that the mic needs phantom power whereas the interface doesn't.
