Re: 5 pin VS USB MIDI - Any difference?

MIDI DIN ports are optically isolated by design. You won’t get ground loop noise over MIDI DIN. USB is a general electronics connection protocol. It wasn’t designed with music production and audio engineering in mind. MIDI (and audio) over USB works well… but there is always the possibility of digit...

Re: Screen setups

Samsung 34" Curved Ultrawide 4k (connected to my Mac via Thunderbolt 3) has been one of the biggest game changers in my DAW setup for years. It's particularly good for DAWs (Reason but also others like Luna which is my new thing) because I can lay out an entire arrangement on one screen with quite a...

Re: How are your midi devices?

I read an interview with Roger Linn in which he was asked why he wasn’t fitting a USB-C port instead of the plain old USB-A port on the Linnstrument. He pointed out that all of the smaller USB ports (the old micro version, the more recent micro version and now the USB-C version) are far flimsier and...

Re: Physical Modeling Has Gotten REALLY Good

I totally get the creative aspect . But this video and thread in particular concerns itself with the synthesis of real life instruments and the accuracy of which p.m. is achieving. I’m still getting the same vibes as when people were dialling in string patches on a Juno and saying how real they sou...

Re: Nektar Aruba: How is it for Reason control?

Didn’t much like mine TBH. The pads are good and the transport controls work well in Reason but the controller rotaries were hard mapped to controls that weren’t that useful such as scrolling through patches (they don’t remap dynamically to different devices in the rack). Also the Nektarine plugin t...

Re: Life threw me a curveball today :-(

Another small update. From today on, I don't have to wear the splint during the day, and I'm actually required to do light work/movements with my hand, to remobilize my tendons and muscles. I never expected how much you lose with your wrist and hand immobilized for just six weeks. Moving my wrist h...

Reddit (although it’s slightly irritating that there are still two separate Reason subs, why don’t they just merge?). KVR sometimes (not really much there for or about Reason, though). That’s it. Not aware of anything else that’s got a lot of useful Reason content/discussion. RT is pretty much the m...

Re: Life threw me a curveball today :-(

Oh man, that’s terrible. Really sorry it happened to you. Horrible, and really distressing. It’s easy to assume the worst when the medics tell you things like that. But… it doesn’t mean all is lost. It is surprising how body (and mind) can adapt over time to work around an injury or loss of function...

Re: What makes Reason a great “Idea Starter”

It’s fast. I can hear an idea in my had, drag a device from the browser into the rack that I know will get me the kind of sounds I want (or drag a preset from one of my Favourite groups), and just get going from there. I don’t get the same vibe with Ableton Live stock devices or scrolling through li...

Re: Ableton Push 3 - STANDALONE ABLETON LIVE!

The product life of Push 2 has been so long that I have some hope of Ableton designing this to last as long, or even longer. Push 2 remains a high quality piece of gear (apart from the deteriorating rubberised plastic, which I'm glad to see Ableton have abandoned for Push 3.) RE audio editing on Pu...

Re: Ableton Push 3 - STANDALONE ABLETON LIVE!

I may buy a Push 3 to replace my Push 2 one day, but if I do it will be for the MPE pads which seem pretty amazing from what I've seen so far. I was thinking of buying a Linnstrument.... probably won't now. But I'm not convinced by the standalone options personally because... 1) I'm not a big fan of...

4) I think it's time for a new MacBook. I'm on an Intel MacBook Pro (2018 model) which normally just shrugs off anything I throw at it in the Reason DAW... but some of these patches are loading over 30% of CPU in a *single* instance of Objekt when I play a big fat 6-note chord. Gulp. No surprise re...

Re: Analog Heat +FX — At A Glance

Great end of chain device for a DAWless setup I think but Elektron gear is getting more expensive... for the same money (almost €900 IIRC) you could buy some great pedals that would cover the same sonic bases but with even more options.

Re: Logic Pro is coming to iPad

I think I’ve tried pretty much every iPad DAW app and groovebox app around, and for a good few years now. And TBH I’ve given up using most of them because IMO the iPad touchscreen isn’t anywhere near as good as mouse and keyboard for detailed audio and MIDI editing. I found a similar issue with my M...

Apollo X4 user here... I'm not in front of my computer at the moment, so doing this from memory... IIRC you need to do do one of the following two options: 1) Turn OFF monitoring in the Reason DAW for the channel you're using to record your guitar and just monitor through the UAD Console app only, w...

Re: Why is Reason Lacking in so many popular DAW lists for 3rd party products

Reason isn't a DAW, it is a VSE, a Virtual Studio Environment. And as a VSE it is without any real competition. I tried to use Reaper as a VSE, and used its configurability to try to get there. Customized that thing for over a decade and finally gave up. When you consider Reason to be a DAW, it has...

Re: Why is Reason Lacking in so many popular DAW lists

I think the old Props lost a lot of commercial momentum when they refused to add VST support to Reason back in the day (can’t remember which version) and all other DAWs with VST support kind of swept past them. Props (and now RS) have tried to make up ground since. Unfortunately, in music software a...

Offline mode for Reason+/Companion is as a big deal for me personally as (finally) getting native M1. RS authentication servers were out of action for a few minutes on Sunday. I think Waves have missed their moment and are struggling to find a way to maintain profitability in the future. Well that’s more than a passing resemblance!! Either a serious act of homage to the original or an actual update to the original. Either way, this could be my next purchase although I wish the original UI had also been used instead of the black and gold (not a fan).
