Re: share your most-used recent effects (or instruments/Players/utilities)
Must be a mix of frequent and recent! Not a surprise to see the Waves TG Mastering Chain at the top-- it pretty much lives in my master bus. And I use the M-Class imager all the time for monoing the low end. The Kuassa Efektor GEq is one of the recently used items. I drop it in here and there for a ...

Re: Reason SSL Mixer Hardware Controller
The DAW controller market is saturated, and becoming more tightly-bound to software every year. I don't see it getting more open--just more closed. If Reason were at the level of userbase of Ableton Live or Logic, it'd be a different story. But this product area just too saturated to move forward i...

Lots of votes for DR-1. Thanks folks!
And yes, I still love RV7000. Not looking to replace so much as supplement.

VSTs I like to use: Valhalla Shimmer, Soundtoys Little Plate, Waves Abbey Rd Plates/Abbey Rd Chambers and that EMT 140 emulation that Arturia released before xmas - it's free, it's fucking awesome and highly recommended if you haven't grabbed it yet https://www.arturia.com/company/press/press-relea...

Thanks for the replies all!
I specified Racks just because that's the forum we're in, but yeah, I'm open to VSTs, also.
Some good suggestions here. I'm looking forward to digging in to all these.

Re: Selig Gain or Gain knob ssl duobt!!!!
Not really - you can very easily place a gain utility last in the signal chain before the fader. That way you have one fader for mixing and one for automation. The same as creating a bus for automation, but neater. Well, to each their own. If it works for you, then by all means keep doing it! If I ...

Re: Selig Gain or Gain knob ssl duobt!!!!
I think you should use *literally any other* level knob or fader for automation - automating the SSL faders means you can't use them for mixing, so why not just use a different parameter? Automating faders (or riding them, as they used to say) *is* mixing, or a big part of it anyway. Once you've go...

Re: Selig Gain or Gain knob ssl duobt!!!!
Clip gain for manually leveling prior to compression (keeps your compressors from working too hard), channel strip trim for making fader positions not ridiculous, faders for both initial balance and then later automation. If you want to measure your available headroom for mastering before exporting ...

Re: Reason SSL Mixer Hardware Controller
There is so much more to catch up on--what is the "thing" for sale? Will it still be modular? Will it only work with Reason, or support other DAWs? How will it be priced now that it's a commercial effort and not a side project? All good questions! I don't have all the answers to them yet, but you c...

Re: Counterpoint in modern music
Great discussion everyone! I just wanted to add a little bit about the "rules" of counterpoint (or any musical procedure) and whether or not they're useful in this case. One thing that happens a lot when we discuss topics like counterpoint is that we confuse the objective and subjective aspects of m...

R11 Channel Strip Rack Devices Are Darn Handy
Seems like such a small change, but I've found so many uses for these little dudes already. 1. Master Bus Compressor on sub groups (usually I would use either the DCAM BusComp or Red 3 VST for groups) 2. any possible ordering of compressor/eq/inserts within a channel 3. clean and simple hp/lp filter...

Re: Sequencer bar numbering
Wouldn't it be nice if we could shift the bar numbers? Personally I would prefer the counting to start at zero, so 16-bar blocks would run from the numbers 0 to 16, 16 to 32, etc. If the value could be set by the user, one could also set for example -1 to accomodate 1 pre-bar that has some lead-up ...

Re: I’m still using Reason like a glorified 4-track tape recorder.
BTW, the compressors in cassette recorders work in most cases without running tape - many producers I know work with little cassette recorders on the floor next to drum kits, with a line out feeding a recorder (in addition to the main microphones). Good to know! I've run signal through mine without...

Re: I’m still using Reason like a glorified 4-track tape recorder.
One have to record really saturated levels and higher speeds to get something decent. BUT, now when also having clean DAWs, this badness can be a nice effect machine, and nice ways to work with as shaper in sound design. . In addition to the saturation, which is great, my 4-track machine has a buil...

Re: Question about frequency modulation in Europa
That's actually a good question. I believe the modifier in FM mode use a sine wave to modulate the oscillator, at a frequency based on what ratio you choose from the drop-down menu. But maybe I'm wrong?

Re: I’m still using Reason like a glorified 4-track tape recorder.
Yup. Here's my Yamaha 4-track. I still pull it out sometimes just for fun. It's starting to become unreliable, though.
Still, it gives me that excitement and sense of possibility. I've never grown tired of the magic of defeating time itself through multi-track recording.

Re: Thoughts on 11 (but not the rack) so far?
Enjoying 11 so far. On my Windows machine, it's running smoothly. I know crossfades and curves don't seem like a lot, and maybe to folks who do more sequencing than I do they're laughably small improvements. I'm a primarily a composer (contemporary Classical, but with a background in pop/folk/prog),...

Re: Reason SSL vs Waves/ Others
I definitely enjoy adding some dirt and warmth to the mix! My logic is that that dirt and warmth doesn't need to come from my most basic compressors and EQs. The great thing about Reason's SSL is that those features are there on every channel by default, and they're kind to the CPU. Huh? Reason's S...

Re: Reason SSL vs Waves/ Others
Yeah, I was gonna say that digital is already too clean and pristine, so I want the noise and the saturation and the added harmonics. That's why my favorite SSL bus comp is IK's. Their version has a GRIT button that "will reproduce the slightly increased 2nd harmonic distortion of an out of calibra...

Re: Reason SSL vs Waves/ Others
As others have mentioned, the mixer is pretty transparent, but:
In actual use, I find the channel strip compressor to be somewhat unpredictable. Don't get me wrong, I can get good results with it. But it never responds like I expect it to. Can't quite put my finger on it.

Re: Do you ever use REs ONLY because you’ve got ‘em?
Yep, definitely do that every time I get something new. It gets used, then over-used, then finally used when necessary. Lately I've been trying to use stock devices as much as possible. It's easy for me to get enamored with new REs and plugins, so reaching for the stock device first forces me to use...

Re: Upgraded MClass EQ
Fabfilter Pro-Q3 is the best EQ I have ever used. But it's a VST with a pro price tag, not a stock EQ. The problem with Reasons EQ is that it could easily be a lot better without much effort, and having a good workhorse EQ in the rack gives you that nice at-a-glance visual feedback and instant hand...
