Re: Random Number generator - persistant, keeping number after reload.
Here's a way you can do it: Create a virtual MIDI loopback bus in your computer's preferences. On Mac, it's the IAC Driver. On Windows, I know there are apps like loopMIDI or loopBe1. In Reason's MIDI settings, make sure the internal loopback bus is recognized. With Reason's easy MIDI detection, you...

Re: What makes Reason a great “Idea Starter”?
From there we discuss why the tools (Reason specifically, although other tools are useful to discuss for comparison) work for us, or why not. When I feel like creating something quick and dirty, when I have an idea I want get recorded before I forget it, when I know how everything should sound, I r...

Re: What makes Reason a great “Idea Starter”?
If I’ve tricked myself into thinking my DAW is the best, and that idea encourages me to create, how does it continue to be an illusion?

Re: Allow more than one cable for a single CV Out
I like this idea.
I think we should have the ability to control the transfer curve inside the wire too. We could even have multiple inputs on a single CV port with a pop-out mini-matrix to choose between addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of the merged signals!

Re: What makes Reason a great “Idea Starter”?
I think a full DAW is built to handle large-scale projects by large teams. Besides tools for music-making, it maximizes workflow optimization with things like batch processing, markers, grouping and hiding, hardware integration, video support, etc. The value proposition is that the DAW is going to h...

Re: SuperBooth 2023 Confession - Reason is for starting an idea
Makes sense. I just finished Seth Godin’s book on marketing. One of the key takeaways was that trying to please everyone leads to pleasing no one. It seems like the brand has been working on positioning itself away from the do-anything-tweaker’s-paradise and more toward the fun, inspirational space ...

Re: To Screw or Not to Screw…
Specifically I have to ask is it the skeuomorphism that doesn’t scale well, or the design/layout? I believe that skeuomorphism and design/layout are intrinsically linked in Reason. In the case of ReBirth, the design was intuitive because all elements were conveniently placed on a single screen. Dur...

Re: about this forum and threads (speaking in generally)
Back in the day (Propellerhead User Forum circa 2008) the music forum was a lively place because we couldn’t believe that fellow users were making such polished stuff in our favorite program. Today, I don’t think anyone is surprised to hear good stuff made in Reason. The quality of the work doesn’t ...

Re: To Screw or Not to Screw…
I love the screws (and the vents, and the fans and serial numbers), but as my projects have grown in size I’ve begun to feel the weight of unused screen real estate. The skeuomorphism is warm and welcoming but it doesn’t scale very well IMO.

Love the idea of generating instruments that don't exist but sound organic. This honestly excites me. Pun fully intended.

Re: QOL Improvement: Scroll Racks Independently
The right-click menu works well for smaller projects, but once there are hundreds of devices nested inside of Combinators and Insert FX, the menu becomes unwieldy pretty quickly.

QOL Improvement: Scroll Racks Independently
Wiring between devices becomes progressively more tedious as the rack grows. What if we had the ability to decouple adjacent racks? Scroll to the top of left rack, and to the bottom of the right rack. Connect a cable horizontally across the rack ears and the connection snaps into place. Even better,...

Re: AI - Cheating or just evolution?
AI can generate music, but it can’t love the music it creates. We have to judge the output and decide whether to save or delete. Really, the advance of technology puts us into the producer’s chair more than ever. Producers didn’t generally play every instrument on their records. They gathered the ta...

Hey everyone, here's a random number generator I use a lot in my generative work. It's a simple combination of a Thor and the free SetCVOut Rack Extension from LeNoteLive. Pressing the keyswitch (C-2 by default) causes the Thor to output the random LFO signals. The SetCVOut devices stores the values...

Re: Elohim (Cali-Style Beat)
Hey I liked this. Got a good melodic vibe and enough interesting parts floating around to keep it fresh. I think the swing on the drums kinda took me out of the groove tho. Love the bass and I think having the drums more quantized would let the bass really steal the show. I’m from South Central LA b...

Re: Reason 12 demo on mac mini sounds shallow
I could tell you there's no difference, but I think each user has to be content that the software isn't doing anything to ruin their sound. I suggest it would be a good idea to run a null test on your side to allay any concerns you have about the sonic quality. Reproduce the same exact mix in both s...

Re: Timbaland's Beatclub (YT/Twitch) ... oberservations, reflections, discussion
I’ve watched several of his streams over the last year. My sense is that he tends to reject for three reasons: (1) derivative works that might be called “type” beats (e.g. “Drake-type beat,” “Kanye-type beat,” etc.) Even if a song sounds good, it likely won’t make an impact if it sounds like it coul...

Re: Imagine if combinators could only be played and modulated via its basic combi interface ...
I’ve suggested it would be good to have the option to make black-box Combinators. With more stock internal logic modules and a few more front-panel features (e.g. meters, stepped knobs and switches, etc.) it could become a visual programming environment that would let non-programming users build and...

Re: Music software has progressed poorly
I need to play and explore. That’s a great point. Reason has always been a colorful and fun space. Some users have remarked that they dislike the drab greys and blues of other DAWs. And as far as emulation, there is something inspiring about the idea that you’re using the same drum machine or compr...

Re: Music software has progressed poorly
Slightly off-topic, but music software also suffers from an emulation problem; almost everyone wants to build a digital version of old technology. Reason’s rack is a prime example. It’s cool to have that visual representation of physical studio gear when you’re working with a relatively small track....

Re: Reason 12.2.7 Release Notes
But are there some examples of playing back such long samples? One use case I employ is loading a long wave file comprised of 92 samples stitched together in one file (92 is the maximum number of slices IIRC). I then use the transient detector to map the slices across the keyboard. This allows me t...

Re: Announced Device: Chord player. What would you like to see?
Looks cool. Is there any way to output the current chord to another instance? For example, play a chord sequence in the first instance, and via CV automatically quantize notes entering a second instance? If so, that would be really powerful for generative stuff.

The name is a bit awkward, but I’m very impressed with the capability. Watched this video yesterday of u-He’s Hive being run in Bitwig. The guy puts a bunch of external LFOs in the rack and they all modulate Hive *per-voice*. https://youtu.be/UktuhuADRuA Imagine if our Europa had unlimited CV inputs...

Re: Reason Studios - Basic Utility REs
Absolutely. I don’t like using an entire Thor as a rectifier, or a Europa just for its envelopes. I’ve wanted a more modular DIY-instrument scheme in Reason for a while. Something like The Grid in Bitwig that would allow users to essentially build Rack Extensions visually from simple building blocks.
